Biography
Dominic Irving (b. 1987) studied composition and piano for four years at Trinity College of Music in London, graduating in 2009 with a 1st-class BMus Honours degree. His tutors included Stephen Montague, Errollyn Wallen, and Philip Fowke.
Dominic has performed as a pianist in several solo recitals, concertos, chamber music concerts and theatre productions. He also enjoys playing orchestral piano, celesta, harpsichord, and keyboards. At Trinity he regularly participated with the Contemporary Music Group and Symphony Orchestra in works by Bernstein, Ligeti, Nyman, Reich, and Adams.
In 2006, he was one of the team of pianists who premiered Frederic Rzewski's 10-hour piano composition The Road. As an accompanist, he has worked with a large variety of performers, from singers and trombonists to percussionists and theremin players.
Dominic has been the rehearsal pianist and musical director for amateur productions of Annie Get Your Gun, Kiss Me Kate, Carousel, West Side Story, Tommy, Anything Goes, Gigi and High School Musical 2. He is also an accomplished music copyist, and has produced scores for projects involving the London Mozart Players and the BBC Symphony Chorus.
Dominic began writing music at age 10 with his first solo piano piece, Strolling, which was played on local radio. Since then, his music has been performed all over the UK, including at the Barbican Centre, the BFI Southbank Centre, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
In 2009, Dominic performed his quirky Concerto in D for Piano and Orchestra as part of his final recital at Blackheath Halls. In 2010, his composition Joshua Jazz: a Cantata for Children was a workshopped as a central part of a children's music course and publicly performed by over 50 young singers and instrumentalists.
Dominic's composition prizes include the White Horse Composition Competition (1998), the Simon May Trophy (2003), National Festival of Music for Youth (2005), London Contemporary Chamber Orchestra 'Piece of the Year' (2008) and the John Halford Prize (2009).
Dominic is now studying for an MA in Composition of Music for Film and Television (MA-FTV) at Bristol University.
